Polytetrafluoroethylene
Polytetrafluoroethylene, commonly known as PTFE or by the brand name Teflon™, is a high-performance synthetic fluoropolymer possessing a unique set of characteristics that make it indispensable for demanding industrial environments.
PTFE is renowned for being one of the most versatile engineering plastics available, primarily due to its extreme chemical inertness, exceptional thermal stability, and the lowest coefficient of friction of any solid material.
Key Properties
Mechanical & Physical
- Exceptional Chemical Resistance
Virtually unaffected by most acids, bases, and solvents. - High Thermal Stability
Maintains integrity at temperatures from -200°C to +260°C. - Ultra-Low Friction
Often described as having the "slipperiness of wet ice on wet ice". The only known surface to which a gecko cannot stick. - Hydrophobic Nature
Repels water and water-containing substances completely.
Chemical & Thermal
- Excellent Dielectric Strength
High insulation properties make it ideal for electrical applications. - Non-Stick Characteristics
Very high "release" properties, almost no substance will adhere to it. - UV and Weather Resistance
Does not degrade when exposed to sunlight or extreme weather. - Physiologically Inert
Safe for use in food contact and medical implants.
