NYLON 12
NYLON 12
Polyamide 12 (PA12)
Polyamide 12 (PA12)
Nylon 12, also known as Polyamide 12 (PA 12), is a high-performance thermoplastic polymer derived from laurolactam. It is distinguished from other polyamides by its unique molecular structure, specifically its long hydrocarbon chain which results in the lowest water absorption rate of all commercial nylons.
Nylon 12 acts as a bridge between lower-performance engineering plastics and high-cost specialty polymers, offering an exceptional balance of mechanical toughness, chemical resistance, and dimensional stability.
Key Properties
Mechanical & Physical
- Superior Impact Resistance
Maintains high toughness even at sub-zero temperatures (down to -40°C). - Low Water Absorption
Minimal moisture uptake ensures parts remain dimensionally stable and retain mechanical properties in humid or wet environments. - Chemically Inert
Exceptional resistance to oils, greases, fuels, hydraulic fluids, and many solvents. - High Fatigue Resistance
Capable of enduring repetitive stress and bending without cracking or failure.
Chemical & Thermal
- Low Friction & Wear
Excellent sliding properties and abrasion resistance, making it ideal for moving parts. - Stress Crack Resistance
Highly resistant to chemicals that typically cause cracking in other plastics. - Process Versatility
Compatible with injection moulding, extrusion, and advanced 3D printing (SLS and Multi Jet Fusion). - Lightweight
One of the lowest densities among polyamides, contributing to fuel efficiency in transport applications.
