High Impact Polystyrene
High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) is a versatile, economical, lightweight and impact-resistant thermoplastic created by modifying general-purpose polystyrene with polybutadiene rubber.
HIPS strikes an ideal balance between stiffness and toughness. It is often used in vacuum forming, printing, and packaging due to its excellent impact resistance and low cost. It is easily fabricated by sawing, cutting, or drilling, and is widely used for signage, toys, and appliance components.
Key Properties
Mechanical & Physical
- Impact Resistance
Unlike brittle standard polystyrene, the added rubber content allows HIPS to absorb energy without fracturing. - Easy to Process
HIPS is one of the easiest materials to thermoform, vacuum form, and injection mould. - Surface Finish
Naturally matte, HIPS can be easily painted, glued, and printed upon. - Insulation
HIPS provides solid electrical insulation properties for low-voltage applications.
Chemical & Thermal
- Dimensional Stability
HIPS maintains its shape and size exceptionally well under varying conditions. - Low Moisture Absorption
Excellent resistance to water makes HIPS suitable for high-humidity environments. - FDA/EU Compliant Grades
Many variants are FDA and EU compliant for food contact. - Recyclability
HIPS is a Category 6 plastic, making it widely recyclable.
