Core materials are lightweight structural layers used to create components with a high strength-to-weight ratio. A key part of sandwich panel construction, core materials are bonded between layers of structural composite skins. Separating the skins and ensuring that they cannot move relative to each other provides a significant mechanical advantage and results in very stiff panels with only a minor increase in weight.
The process of separating the structural skins with a core material results in a much lighter structure than solid composite materials would provide. Increasing the core thickness increases the stiffness of the sandwich panel without significantly increasing the weight and cost.
